There was a TV on the wall in this Thai diner, and naturally because of the noise level of the customers, the employees had the audio turned off - but there was closed captioning on, so people could still watch the show.
I was waiting in a rather lengthy line, and sort of became invested in the show within the span of the time that I was standing there, slowly shuffling forward.
Ok, so here’s a quick rundown of what happen these past 2 days:
Friday: DashCon Staff were going to pay the hotel the money after the con was over. There was a payment plan in place, which they gave the hotel money over the past few months (they paid a huge amount on Thursday, the day before the con) However, the hotel’s head of sales told the staff that original plan could not be continued, and needed the 17-20k by 10pm, or the con will be shut down. The con was also going to take the proceeds from those who were going to pay at the door, and give it the hotel (DC was expecting 3000 - 5000 visitors….. which is waaaay too high for a first time con). So those at DashCon and those on tumblr, donated via paypal to the con, and made the goal. However, it takes a few days for things to be cleared in paypal, so idk what is going on with that. But I heard that those who donated, are suppose to be getting refunds.
Also, I want to mention that the reason why people who worked at the hotel didn’t know, what because HoS didn’t notify Head of Management.
Saturday: Night Vale was suppose to be doing a live reading from 12pm to 1 pm. And everyone who was going to that, had to get their badge checked an hour advance. That’s fine. But we all ended up sitting there for 2 hours, waiting for WTNV. At the 1 hour, 30 minute mark, someone came in to let us know that they were trying to get in contract with Night Vale. Ok sure. But once it hit 1:16pm, the staff came in and told us that Night Vale wasn’t coming. The reason why, was because originally, it was verbally discussed that they would get paid after the show. However, with that happen on Friday, I can only imagine that they wanted to by paid upfront. The Staff couldn’t pay them in time, so they left. Those who paid for reserve seats (since, ya know, that is a normal thing with these kind of things. People act so surprise for that), are supposedly getting reimbursed.
Thing is thought, if it’s anyone fault, it’s the staff’s. It was poor management with money and miscommunication. Also, it seems like a lot of verbally agreements, but no documentation on said agreement.
